For many local businesses, the Google Business Profile (the listing that appears on Google Search and Maps) is seen more often than the website itself. People check hours, read reviews and tap "call" without ever visiting the site. A complete, accurate profile costs nothing and is one of the most effective things a local business can maintain. Use this checklist to review one. Available options vary by business type and Google changes the dashboard from time to time, so some labels may differ.
1. Claim and verify the profile
If the business has a listing that nobody has claimed, anyone can suggest edits to it. Claiming it lets the owner control the information. Google will ask for verification, usually by a code sent by post, phone, email or video, depending on the business. Keep access to the account in the business's name rather than a former employee's or contractor's personal email.
2. Use the real business name
The name should match what appears on the signage and the website. Do not add keywords or locations ("Best Cheap Plumber Lahore") to the name field. It breaks Google's guidelines and can lead to the listing being suspended.
3. Choose the right categories
The primary category has a large effect on which searches the business appears for, so choose the one that describes the main service most accurately, such as "Dentist" rather than a general "Health". Add a few secondary categories for other services, but only ones that really apply.
4. Make the contact details exact
Check the address, phone number and website link character by character. They should match the website, social media pages and other directories. Use a phone number that is answered, and a website link that goes to the most useful page (often the homepage, or a booking page).
5. Set accurate opening hours
Wrong hours are one of the most common causes of bad reviews ("Closed when it said open"). Set regular hours, add special hours for holidays, and update them before the days they change. If the business is closed temporarily, mark it as such instead of leaving it open.
6. Write a clear description
Use the description to say plainly what the business does, who it serves and what makes it different, in natural language. Avoid promotions, links, phone numbers and all-capital text, which the guidelines do not allow. A few well-written sentences are enough.
7. Add real photos
Listings with good photos get more engagement. Upload clear, recent images of the exterior (so people can recognise the entrance), the interior, the team, products and finished work. Use real photos instead of stock images, and add new ones regularly. Check on mobile, where most people see them.
8. List services and products
Depending on the business type, you can add services, menu items or products with descriptions and sometimes prices. This helps people judge whether the business is what they are looking for before they call. Keep it in sync with what you actually offer.
9. Ask for reviews, and respond to all of them
Reviews influence both ranking and trust. Ask satisfied customers after a job is done, with a direct link to the review form. Do not offer payment or discounts in exchange for reviews, and do not review your own business, since both break the rules. Reply to every review, thanking the positive ones and answering negative ones calmly and specifically. Future customers read the replies as well as the reviews.
10. Post updates
Where the dashboard offers it, short updates about offers, events or news show that the business is active. They do not need to be frequent, but an outdated profile with nothing recent looks neglected.
11. Check attributes and booking options
Attributes such as wheelchair accessibility, online appointments or free Wi-Fi help people decide. Where relevant, connect a booking or ordering link, so that the person who is ready to act can do it right away.
12. Keep it consistent everywhere
Compare the profile with the website, Facebook page, Instagram bio and any directory listings. Name, address, phone number and hours should be identical. If you have moved or changed number, update every place. Inconsistencies confuse customers and can weaken local search performance.
How to review one quickly
| Check | Time |
|---|---|
| Name, category, contact details, hours | About 3 minutes |
| Photos and description | About 3 minutes |
| Reviews and replies | About 5 minutes |
| Consistency with website and social pages | About 5 minutes |
